A Mid-Century Modern Home
Once in a while I like to get off my comfort zone and do something new. This time, I decided to look into Mid-Century Modern Architecture 'style'. Well, it is not actually a style but a collection of designs built roughly from 1940 to 1975. They share, "-an emphasis on lifestyle, a new way of modern living centered around family and home-Elaine Stiles".
Characterized by flat planes, large windows and open spaces, these homes, featured simplicity and an intergration with nature, encouraging residents to explore the world in new ways.
Floor Plan
The houses had open floor plans and giant sliding-glass doors which encouraged people to go outside. With these walls of glass, children became engaged and open-minded because the environment stimulated senses in a different way.
Rebounding from World War 2, people were building families and making homes. They wanted open living spaces, views of their yards and high-tech kitchens with windows above the sinks so they could wash their dishes while they watch their children play.
"..this was the era of the patio.."
Distinguishing Features
The distinguishing features of this style consist of a classic, understated look, and clean lines with minimal fuss.
- Funcionality is important, as form follows function.
- Uncluttered and sleek lines with both organic and geometric forms.
- Minimal ornamentation.
- An exploration of different traditional as well as non-traditional materials.
- Juxtaposition of different and sometimes contrasting materials.
Color and Materials
There is liberal use of traditional material such as wood and non-traditional materials such as metal, glass, vinyl, plywood, plexiglass and Lucite. A vast range of color from neutral to bold and a graphic use of black and white.
Mid-century modern encompasses three well-known styles- International, contemporary and organic- as well as less-recognized designs; A-frame, new formalism and brutalism. What resonates though, is the simplicity and clean look.
